The African-American Heritage Parade Committee’s 40th Anniversary Celebration will feature a festival, parade, and health pavilion over the Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-29, 2006, with the parade traveling along Broad Street and the cultural events convening at Weequahic Park in Newark, NJ.
The Heritage Festival begins at Weequahic Park on Friday, May 26 with performance spotlights on local talent. The festival continues throughout the weekend with a youth showcase on Saturday, May 27 with live entertainment, carnival rides, vendors selling food and wares throughout the park. The festival concludes with games for the community-at-large to enjoy through Monday May 29.
The highlights of the heritage weekend are the Choir Boy performance on Saturday, May 27 (5:30pm-6pm) and the African-American Heritage Statewide Parade. Beginning at 11:00 A.M. Sunday, May 28, the heritage parade—replete with marching bands, floats, historic balloons, clowns, dancers, singers, music, politicians, community groups and law enforcement agencies from across the state and nation—will travel along Broad Street in the historic downtown Newark area starting at Newark City Hall and ending at Military Park. The festival will conclude in Weequahic Park in Newark’s South Ward.
