After signing a joint venture deal in the summer of 2005 with Universal Music Group (UMG) to form The Movement Worldwide/ Universal Music Group, the Chicago-based rap group, Qualo, will finally release their long-awaited first single, “Coco”, a song that sings the praises of women in hip hop. In this era of Oscar-winning pimp tales, the song has been humorously lauded as an “act of courage” and seriously praised as “a long-awaited breath of fresh air”.
Known for their controversial and no-holds-barred lyrics, Qualo has cultivated a strong cult following in regional hip hop circles. “Coco” however, reveals a different dimension to the street group. Without sacrificing their core fan base Qualo has found a way to connect with a broader female audience.
Already a radio hit as an independent release, both UMG and The Movement expect “Coco” to sweep the charts. It has already been picked up by WLLD-FM (Orlando), The Beat (Los Angeles), KSLZ-FM (St. Louis), WMPW-FM (Memphis) and WGCI-FM (Chicago). “Coco” has the potential to do for Qualo what “Keep Your Head Up” did for 2Pac and “I Need Love” did for LL Cool J.
